Aloysius Lim (Mentor)

Mentor for budding photographers

Since honing his skills shooting local gigs in 2003, Aloysius has built up an impressive portfolio bar none. It was only in 2006 when the opportunity to shoot Franz Ferdinand did his star really shine. Aloysius then went on to shoot the tastemakers of today’s music scene from Coldplay to Jason Mraz, Police to Green Day. He’s also successfully captured many unforgettable moments at renowned festivals like Womad & Baybeats. Comes as no surprise he has several honourable mentions at the International Photo Awards (IPA) for his concert shots.

I like how a photograph records a special moment that some would miss and others might want to relive: the stance of a guitarist as he shreds on the strings, the clash of drumsticks against cymbals or a crowd in mid-jump, their arms thrown forward to the beat of the music. Also, slightly more personal moments like when a band’s front-man takes a grateful swig from his bottle of water in between sets. I enjoy the challenge of having to anticipate these spilt-second actions that make a picture special.

I am especially intrigued by the beauty in people’s expressions which is why I love taking portraits. Concert photography for me is an added bonus because this is when people just let loose in response to the music, the crowd, the lights and the pure raging energy of the band!

I want my concert photographs to be able to take anyone who was present at the time to be transported back to their fondest memories and to make anyone who missed the concert wish they had been there.

I am a film student from Singapore and my photography skills are self-taught.

My photography is about everyday life and my surroundings. From this aspect, I try to show a state of mind, ranging between boredom and pretty things.

When my characters are not present, I photograph empty spaces, through which I try to make this loneliness felt.

I love to learn and try new things. In the past, I would go to gigs without my camera and just want to enjoy the music. But gig photogpraphy is something I recently grew a passion for.

I am fascinated with visual imagery and take immense pleasure in dissecting anything from Nick Knight’s gorgeous, bizarre portrayal of Bjork to Kevin Cummins’s iconic portraits of Ian Curtis. I count Cindy Sherman and Helmut Newton as my heroes.

I studied photography when I was in art school but upon graduating, chose to pursue and make a career of another passion – video. With the onslaught of brilliant bands gracing our shores in recent times, 2009 saw me rekindling my love for gig photography. It is to me a visual translation of not only a band’s music but the emotions derived from it. I am constantly amazed by how a single frame is able to capture different facets of a concert – anything from showman’s hysterical antics to a raving, hungry crowd screaming “encore” in unison.

I have had passion for photography for as long as I can remember. Since young, I was delighted in how a moment can be captured through the lens of a camera, and how time stands still within the frame of a photograph.

Recently, I upgraded from a compact camera to my first DSLR and am amazed by the machine’s capabilities. Photography is not just a hobby for me but it's a way of preserving memories and sharing experiences!

Having the opportunity to shoot for the upcoming yFest and Baybeats is like a dream come true for me! I'm very pleased to be given such a rare opportunity and will definitely give my best for this event.

Music and photography defines me. They keep me sane and curious from the smallest, most mundane things to shooting travel and gigs. Without it, I'd be bored, withdrawn, unaware, less courageous and adventurous. I love the view from my lens then keep it.
